I'm trying to go through an overhaul of a lot of my process and how I approach the things I create. I feel it has gotten stale and I'm trying to break through a rather nasty plateau as well. I have to admit, I've never approached any kind of master study seriously and want to change the game up quite bit. Its overdue for more growth.
Only 2.5 hours in and will work on it throughout the week when I have time between other work. I can feel the rust and visual boundaries cracking a bit as I see the errors staring back at me. So Ill keep going.
I commend you for doing so well with this, and as far as error I see none though your artistic eye is more than likely better than mine. I have a question if you don't mind me asking: Is this what you normally do once you've hit your 'plateau'? If not what are some other ways that you've worked through getting your art out of your head and onto the canvas (whatever medium it may be)?
When you do a study like this, would you be concerned at all with trying to replicate the texture, or would you just focus on things like color, value, and shapes?
At this point, I'm realizing texture is something that I'm having to consider saving until a later stage of painting. Its the handicap of digital. I have to mimic it, instead of having a canvas or dry paint help create some of these wonderful things I'm seeing in his strokes. Same with the grain of the underpainting showing through. I feel that values and shapes are very important to get down as its what I'm struggling with the most currently. As I get those improved, maybe I can find a brush or several more tools to help me in textures as well.
That makes a lot of sense, it seems like you could potentially spend a lot of time just trying to mimic texture in a digital painting. From the study, the original really has some great tooth and grit to it (I don't have a high res of it, but I'm guessing from cracked paint, dry brushing, and some washes) that really seem to unify the whole piece, it's fascinating how that works. Thank you for the reply!
